Letter: Why were trees destroyed?

I AM writing with regard to the letter last week from David Mainwaring.

Each and every one of us has a right to express an opinion. A right exercised by Mr Mainwaring, so why does he denigrate Joyce Stevenson's right?

Having had numerous dealings with many large and small organisations over the years, I have a lot of empathy for Joyce Stevenson and am pleased to stand up and be counted as one who supports her stance, and also the wishes of the 327 petitioners.

In my experience, organisations choose to ignore questions from individuals if they don't think it's in their interest to answer.

But almost all organisations have customer service rules, in which there are time limits to respond to a customer.

So why hasn't Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust responded to, or acknowledged, the petition?

If an organisation chooses not to answer or even acknowledge correspondence then surely responsible people have a right and a duty to bring this to the attention of the general public?

Why were the healthy oak trees felled?

"Because the canopy needed opening up", we are told.

But won't that now affect the flora and fauna in a site that has been deemed an SSSI? A site that has protection in law.

How can an organisation flout laws, which, it would seem, apply only to ordinary people?

This isn't just happening in Dole Wood. Look at the website of the people who are attempting to save Bintree Woods, Norfolk. (www.bintreeinfo.co.uk/index.php)

Why are a few trees important to us all?

Simply, because they are part of this planet's fragile eco system.

They have a function, not only for the flora and fauna of their place in the woods of this country, but for human life too.

The wholesale destruction of the rainforest is not providing benefits for anyone but for the purse of those who are destroying it.

But Dole Wood isn't suffering on that scale some may say. But from a raindrop a mighty river grows.

Did the trees really have to be destroyed?
