Christmas cards in August is commercialism gone mad

I WRITE because I am dismayed, perplexed and quite frankly astonished.

Today is August 29 - theSaturday ofthe August Bank Holiday weekend.

Today, I visited a card shop to purchase a wedding anniversary card for my daughter and her husband. Lo-and-behold, on prominent display were Christmas cards!

It is almost 17 weeks before Christmas day, that's very nearly one third of the year.

It is August, it is still the summer period and the winter months should be really very far from our thoughts. This is commercialism gone mad.

It's bad enough seeing shops display Back to School goods the day after children break up for the summer holidays.

It's bad enough having hot cross buns thrust at us in February (and even January).

It's bad enough having fireworks available (for November 5) from the end of September.

But why, oh why, should we have to put up with such blatant "selling" of goods so long before the festive season. It's high time this sort of thing was stopped.

The festive season is long enough as it is (and no, I am not anti-Christmas), it's quite simply that I do not wish to be reminded of Christmas during the month of August, and I am sure that I am not in the minority when I say this.

By the way, when I enquired as to why so early at the shop, they said they did not have room to store the display. Pathetic, or just jumping on the band wagon?
