With just over a week to go until the Race for Life event at Burghley House, women are being urged to grab their last chance to entre.

Nearly 2,400 women have signed up for the event, which takes place from 11am on Sunday, May 31, and there are now only a few places left for the 10k course and not many more for the 5k.

Entry closes on Friday next week and organisers are encouraging mums, daughters, grannies, sisters, friends and workmates, who want to take part in the women-only event to sign up now at www.raceforlife.org.

The event, which runs in partnership with Tesco, raises millions of pounds every year for Cancer Research UK.

Julie Braithwaite, event manager for Race for Life in East Anglia, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that so many women have entered Race for Life events in Stamford.

“But we still have places left so we are urging women to sign up as soon as possible.”

Last year, 3,343 women took part in Race for Life in Stamford and helped raise an incredible £201,000 for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. This year, the charity hopes to match that figure.

The atmosphere at all the events is full of emotion as participants wear signs on their backs declaring their reasons for taking part either remembering loved ones lost to cancer or celebrating the lives of those who have survived.

Julie said: “Race for Life is not competitive and it’s not about being fit or fast. You can walk, jog, or run around the course if you like.

“Because these events are all about the feel-good factor that comes from being part of the ‘pink army’ as thousands of women come together to defeat cancer.

“But it’s not just about the women, their men can play their part too - as we are always in the need for more volunteers to cheer, marshal and support the ladies on their way. Just sign up online or visit the team at the grey marquee on the day.”

Cancer Research UK is also encouraging people to bag up their unwanted items and take them to the Donation Station at each Race for Life event.

For those unable to take part in the Stamford event, there will be a 5k race at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough on Tueaday, July 7, at 7.30pm.

And Race for Life’s new Pretty Muddy obstacle course will be taking place at Peterborough Arena on Sunday, June 21, at 10am.
