Stamford Hospital is under-staffed, according to a health watchdog report.

Care Quality Commission inspectors warned hospital bosses they had failed to employ enough staff to “keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs”.

The details were revealed by The Sunday Telegraph yesterday (Sunday).

Stamford Hospital, which is managed by the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Trust, was one of 17 in the country to be issued with a warning during the latest Care Quality Commission inspections.

Director of care quality and chief nurse at the trust Chris Wilkinson said: “Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission raised moderate concerns that the level of staffing was not always adequate on the John Van Geest ward at Stamford Hospital from when they visited in August 2012.

“The trust has recruited a new ward manager and the successful candidate started in her role in November. We have also been successful in filling several vacant nursing posts.

“In addition, staffing rosters have been reviewed and modified to ensure adequate staffing levels at weekends and during staff meal breaks.

“We continue to monitor staffing levels daily. We are confident these actions will ensure appropriate nurse staffing levels and care standards for patients.”

The list of under-staffed hospitals was obtained by the Labour Party, which accused David Cameron of imposing a “toxic medicine of spending cuts and reorganisation” on the NHS.

Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham said: “The public has a right to know if their local hospital is taking risks with staffing levels.”

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said there was “no excuse” for low staffing levels and he expected “swift action” to be taken by those named as failing.
