Hospitals to get share of £25m Government grant
Two hospitals have been given a slice of £25m Government funding to be spent on maternity units.
The Peterborough and Stamford Hospital Trust and University Hospitals of Leicester are among 100 health trusts in the UK to have bids for a share of the funds accepted, Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter revealed today (Thursday).
The money will go towards improving and upgrading maternity units.
Dr Poulter said: “We are now going to see huge improvements to maternity services right across the country – from birthing pools to family rooms and even new midwifery-led units.
“These will make a big difference to the experience mums and families have of NHS maternity services, with more choice and a better environment where women can give birth.
“Maternity units have had to show evidence that they asked mums and dads about what changes they need to make – so we know these are the changes local people really want to see.”
The Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Trust will receive £30,089, which will be used to add home comforts to the maternity wards, including sofa beds and extra furniture.
University Hospitals of Leicester will be given £246,200 to be spent on refurbishing birthing pool rooms, adding two further pools and providing reclining armchairs to delivery rooms.
Royal College of Midwives chief executive Cathy Warwick said: “It is great to learn about the positive changes that this extra £25m will make to many units up and down the country.”
