The founder of children’s brain tumour charity Anna’s Hope has been appointed chairman of Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Trust.

Rob Hughes, 56, who lives in Pilsgate near Barnack, will take over from the current trust chairman Nigel Hards following an official handover process. It is still being finalised when Mr Hughes will officially start in the role.

He was appointed to the non-executive role on the trust’s board following a rigorous recruitment and selection programme.

Mr Hughes is a former managing director of Mars Food UK. He is currently a trustee at Brain Tumour Research and is also involved in the NHS Strategic Review of Children’s Neuro Surgery.

He is chairman of Anna’s Hope, which he founded with his wife Carole after the death of their three-year-old daughter Anna in 2006 following a brain tumour. The couple also have an older daughter, Sara.

He said: “I am delighted to join Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals. I am looking forward to continuing the work that Nigel, the board of directors and those who work at both hospitals, have embarked upon to provide excellent care to patients.”

Mark Bush, lead governor and vice chairman of the trust’s Council of Governors, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Rob to the trust and we look forward to benefitting from his business expertise.

“We would like to thank Nigel Hards for extending his term of office by a year last summer, to ensure the recruitment of a new chairman could be done without the need to rush the process. His generosity will allow for a smooth transition to take place between the two chairmen.”

Trust interim chief executive Dr Peter Reading also welcomed Mr Hughes to the trust.

He said: “Rob will be joining us at what is a challenging time for Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals. I am looking forward to working with him to ensure we continue to provide the best care for our patients while working more efficiently in order to save costs.

“On behalf of our staff and the board of directors, I would like to thank Nigel for his unfaltering support, his wisdom, and his constant drive to ensure our patients get the best possible care in our two hospitals.”
