A RETIRED geologist with a love of words has published his favourite compositions in a poetry book.

Philip Dunkerley, 65, of Hazelwood Drive, Bourne, picked 65 poems from 100 he has written over the years and quite aptly chose the title Sixty-Five for his publication.

Philip, who lives with his wife Nilma, had his book published at the end of December and is pleased with his achievement.

He said: “I have always enjoyed words and I was inspired to publish my book of poems because of this.

“My wife Nilma also encouraged me to do this.

“I’ve never had a book published before and I thought it would be nice to have a selection of my poems bound properly.”

By the age of nine Philip had already written some poems and he took his interest from there.

His book includes many different poems on a wide range of topics including the natural world, as well as works about young love, angst, travel, family life, humour and cynicism.

The poems in the book include some of those he wrote when he was nine right through to pieces of work he has penned during his sixties.

He said: “My poems were written at different times in my life which is why they are about many different things.

“I feel that something has got to happen to make you feel deeply enough about it to then write a poem. If not, it is hard to produce much.

“It needs to be something which you feel you need to get down on to paper with purpose and a message.”

Philip’s style of poetry also varies throughout his book.

He said: “My style has evolved, as I have evolved and got older.

“I tended to write lots of freeform when I was younger, but in more recent times I have written poems with a more formal structure like sonnets and song, standard and verse.”

Philip hopes his book will be enjoyed by his family and friends and anyone else who reads his poems.

He said: “I also hope it might encourage other people who would like to do something like I have done, to go ahead and make it happen.”

Philip thanked graphic designer Stuart Handley from Mad Publishing for designing the cover of his book.

Philip’s book is available to buy online at Amazon for £10.99. It is also stocked at Walkers bookshop, in North Street, Bourne, at a discounted price of £9.99.
