Despite the downpour of rain on Sunday afternoon, families from across Bourne ventured out to enjoy a day of building the ultimate dens at Bourne Wood.

Hosted by The Friends of Bourne Wood, the den building competition was an enjoyable afternoon for all, with five families using leftover materials in the wood to create their very own dens.

Hidden deep within the wood, the dens were covered with bracken, creating excellent hiding places.

John Wilcockson, the leader of the event explained to the families how to make the dens, suggesting extra details that could be added to the dens and reminding the competitors that every member of each family should be able to fit inside the dens - that must be waterproof.

The winning family at the event was Eric Bower, Kat Walters and Rose and Ted Bower-Walters. They had created a removable door for their cosy woodland den.

The runners-up had managed to create two seats inside their den, including a cooker and a bar, whilst another family made a dog kennel.

After an afternoon of showers, everyone involved was keen to get tucked away in their home-made dens, as it was much drier inside than out in the wood.

Friends of Bourne Wood would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part and to John Wilcockson for running the event, along with the help of volunteers, Cindy, Brian and Valerie, who joined in with the
judging.
