Dry spell is not over for river and pool in Bourne yet
St Peter's Pool is still dry
A RIVERBANK and pool in Bourne are still running dry.
St Peter’s Pool, in the Wellhead Park off South Street, ran dry for the first time in years in early September and it is yet to fill back up.
The riverbank on the Bourne Eau in South Street has also suffered as a result with the water levels gradually dropping.
Bourne United Charities owns both areas and is becoming increasingly concerned about the situation.
Charities chairman Trevor Hollinshead said they are still waiting for rain to fall in Derbyshire before the problem will be resolved because the pool is filled with water by seven underground springs filtering from there to the river.
He said: “It is still completely dried up and has given us cause for concern.
“It is the longest we have ever known it to be dry for and I have never known it to be dry at this time of year.”
However, the organisation plans to make the most of the dry spell.
The charities plan to start a £40,000 project to improve the overall look of the gardens and to secure the riverbank.
The bank has been eroding over the years and much of the protective boarding has been exposed and is rotting away.
Mr Hollinshead said now is the best time to carry out the work while the river is fairly dry.
He said: “We are hoping to get the riverbank part of the project completed within the next few weeks, then for rain to fall and everything to come together for us.”
The organisation had originally planned to carry out the work in the spring.
