Two Bourne Abbey all girls football teams went to a tournament in Spalding at the Gleed School. Bourne Abbey A team played Westfield A team first and came away with a 1-0 win, which was a great start to the day. As games went by, the A team went from strength to strength, winning 3 – 0 and 5 – 0 in the pool stages.
The B team had a harder pool round and came away with one win, two defeats and a draw, placing them 4th going into the afternoon’s knockouts. Both teams played exceptionally well in the afternoon, the B team once again playing tough games and competing well against other schools A teams. The A team did not concede a single goal all day but with a 0 – 0 draw in the final, Spalding Parish A went on to be eventual winners on goal difference with Bourne Abbey A finishing 2nd overall out of 15 teams, the B team respectably placed mid table.
All played exceptionally well and everyone was tired after several hours of football but particular mention should go to captains (A) Erin and (B) Penelope for taking charge of such a huge squad of players and leading by example. Year 5, Anjelica, played incredibly well both in goal and out field for the A team and Sophie made a noticeable impact for the B’s.
All of the girls had an amazing day, which remained dry but windy, and would love to do it again. Mr Thomas said after the match, “All the girls played their socks off with great running and passing skills, not to mention some excellent tackling. Every girl was an ambassador for the school and cheered very loudly from the side-lines.”
