PUPILS at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy have been gearing up for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games by taking part in one of the more unusual sporting activities.

More than 90 Year 5 children joined in with a game of ‘Goalball’, as part of Sainsbury’s 1 Million Kids Challenge, an initiative that aims to get one million children to try out a Paralympic sport by the start of the Games in August.

Goalball is a fast paced team sport, originally designed for blind athletes but can be played by anyone to develop listening, communication and team work.

PE teacher Hannah Anderson said: “It was interesting for the children to use senses that they don’t normally rely on, and it gave them a real appreciation and respect for athletes who are visually impaired or blind.”
