Bourne Grammar School finally becomes an academy

A SCHOOL is celebrating after becoming an academy this week.

Bourne Grammar School completed its conversion to academy status on Sunday, meaning all schools in Bourne have now made the conversion to academies.

Headteacher Jonathan Maddox said: “Now fully in control of our own destiny, we feel confident to take on, to embrace and to surmount the challenges ahead, remaining as determined as before to ensure and to strengthen our position as one of the top-performing schools in the east of England.”

The school, in South Road, revealed in October 2010 that it wanted to apply for academy status but was held up because part of its site in South Road, Bourne, is owned by Bourne United Charities and its trustees objected.

The charity objected to the plans for reasons including the fear the school could lose its selective status, leaving Bourne without a grammar school. However that will not be the case.

After months of negotiations the charity gave its consent to the bid in June.

The conversions means the school is now able to break free from local authority and government control.

Mr Maddox said the school governors were confident that, as an academy, the school was now in a strong position.

He said: “Our prominent success over many years is in no small part due to the strength of our governance – strength which gives the governors confidence to take on the additional challenges that fall to them as academy trustees and company directors.”

The school’s name has remained the same as have the uniforms.

Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, formerly Bourne Abbey Primary School, changed its status in December 2010 - becoming the first primary in the county to gain academy status.

The Robert Manning College opened as Bourne Academy in September, and Bourne Westfield Primary Academy converted in November.

Academy status allows schools to adapt the national curriculum, set its own pay and conditions for staff and change the length of terms.

OK then Governors, you now have your collective hands fully upon the tiller. What are your plans for alleviating the problems of student cars snarling up whole residential areas of the Town? Over to you Governors; perhaps you could reply publicly? Or alternatively, you could accede to the polite requests of BTC, and come along to discuss the very real problems faced by taxpaying residents, caused by your inaction.
