A petition has started against plans to turn a former bank in Market Deeping into a Domino’s Pizza takeaway.
More than 400 people have signed the petition against the restaurant in just two weeks.
The planning application was lodged with South Kesteven District Council in January to change the use of the former HSBC bank in Market Place, Market Deeping, for hot-food takeaway use and to install extraction and ventilation equipment and external alterations.
A petition against the plans was started by district councillor Ashley Baxter, who represents the Market and West Deeping ward.
He is concerned the proposed takeaway would cause “irreparable damage” to a Grade II listed building in the heart of Market Deeping’s conservation area. He also said deliveries would cause large volumes of traffic to an already busy area.
He said: “We have a healthy diversity of takeaways and restaurants in the Deepings and I would normally welcome new establishments if they offer jobs and investment.
“However, this particular application in the heart of our historic town centre is inappropriate. It is likely to cause traffic congestion, litter and will be to the detriment of many existing locally-owned businesses in the town.”
The application states the creation of the takeaway would create 35 jobs but Coun Baxter alleges that most will be “part-time and paid at the minimum wage”.
He insisted he had nothing against Domino’s Pizza but added: “They will only displace employment at the expense of existing takeaways which are owned and managed by people with a genuine connection to the Deepings community.”
The application does not specifically mention that the takeaway would be Domino’s Pizza but has been submitted by Boston Heath, which trades as Domino’s Pizza. The takeaways are run on a franchisee-owned basis.
There is already a Domino’s Pizza in the Mercury area in St Paul’s Street, Stamford, which opened in January 2014.
A spokesman for Domino’s Pizza declined to comment on the petition.
The application will be determined by the South Kesteven planning committee later in the year.

The HSBC bank closed last summer in spite of a petition set up to try and save it. The bank said this was due to a fall in the number of customers using branches.
