Join panel and help police fight crime

People have been urged to join a neighbourhood policing panel to let officers know what kind of crime they should focus on.

Panel meetings for the Bourne and Witham-on-the-Hill beats take place every three months.

They comprise police officers and members of the public and are open discussions about the kind of problems that occur most in each area.

But officers are concerned that not enough people are attending the meetings and certain issues are being missed.

Community beat sergeant Rachel Blackwell said: “The panel is an open and structured discussion about the problems that cause most harm or nuisance in the area.

“After a meeting the panel and police explore possible solutions and up to three neighbourhood priorities are then set for the next three months.

“These will be a focus for your local policing team for that period.”

To join a panel you should be available for the two-hour meetings in January, April, July and October, although you are not required to attend every one.

Priorities for the Bourne area at the moment include speeding along Pointon Road in Billingborough and catalytic converter thefts, while in Witham-on-the-Hill and the surrounding villages the priorities are speeding and lorries breaching weight limits.

The next meetings take place at Castle Bytham Village Hall at 6.30pm on April 10 and at Elsea Park Community Centre in Bourne at 7.30pm on April 15.

Lincolnshire’s police and crime commissioner has announced plans to increase the police’s council tax share by two per cent.

Alan Hardwick formally submitted the proposals to the county’s police and crime panel on Tuesday. The panel scrutinises Mr Hardwick’s work in the role which was introduced earlier this year.

The proposed increase would result in an extra 7p per week for band D properties.

Mr Hardwick said: “My proposal ensures I am able to deliver all of the commitments I have made in my police and crime plan and most importantly means we can maintain 1,100 police officers in Lincolnshire.”
