Bourne Town Council hopes to form a team of “Icebusters” to help spread salt around the town and keep pavements free of ice this winter.

The council has a supply of grit ready to help combat ice and make the town safe for pedestrians. But the authority does not have the manpower or budget to distribute it.

To try to solve the problem, councillors have come up with a scheme they call “Icebusters”. They hope to work with the public to identify potential problem areas and recruit volunteers to help spread salt when needed.

Coun Roy McKinney is chairman of the working group set up to look at the issue. He said: “This is an attempt to sound out how we can solve what is a potential problem in certain parts of the town. The concerns are for the less mobile or elderly.

“The council doesn’t have the staff to be able to spread the grit itself. This is an opportunity for the community to come forward and identify the areas that they think need specific attention.

“It’s an opportunity for the council to provide a solution to a problem that may occur in certain areas. We hope that it’s a good response. We then have to figure out the logistics and what the costs are.”

The working party wants people to tell them about areas within the parish that would benefit from the installation of a grit bin.

Once areas have been identified and agreed, a volunteer will need to be responsible for the grit bin as well as the spreading of grit and salt when instructed by the council.

Coun McKinney said: “We hope to be able to meet the expectations of the town.”
