A mum, who’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer, says she is honoured to be speaking on stage and setting the runners off at Race for Life in Stamford next month.
Heidi Rock, from Bourne, was asked to share her story at the Race for Life event, which takes place at Burghley House on Sunday, June 5, after the event organisers read her story in the Mercury.
The 35-year-old was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 just a month after her 31st birthday. The mum of two daughters and one stepson took part in a Cancer Research UK trial as part of her treatment.
Almost five years later the family was given the devastating news that the cancer had returned and spread to Heidi’s bones.
But in a true example of the defiant Race for Life spirit, Heidi started fundraising for Cancer Research UK. First, she supported the local ladies’ RugbyFIT group when they organised a charity day at Bourne Rugby Club on her behalf. She has now recruited 126 ladies to join her Race for Life team.
Now the former charity worker is calling on other mums, daughters, sisters and friends to follow her lead, to swell the ranks of Race for Life’s pink army by signing up at www.raceforlife.org
It’s the fourth time Heidi has taken part in Race for Life since her initial diagnosis but this year she will be walking as the cancer has caused small fractures in her bones. Alongside her will be her daughters, Katie, 13, and Laura, 11, her sisters, friends and other family members. Husband Jason, 43, and stepson Cameron, 17, will cheer her on from the sidelines.
Heidi said: “In 2011 when I was first diagnosed we got our heads down and got on with it, we powered through. We were really positive about it. I was having the check-ups and everything looked okay but then something changed.
“We’re still being positive now even though my cancer is terminal, we’re trying to get the best out of it. The charity rugby day was a really positive thing. Putting together the team for Race for Life is another positive thing.”
Heidi said she was “nervous about speaking on stage but looking forward to it also”.
Some of her supporters are taking part in the first Pretty Muddy event for Stamford, the day before on Saturday, June 4.
