DRIVERS are being urged not to park near a new zebra crossing because they are putting people's lives at risk.
Pedestrians say motorists are ignoring parking restrictions near the £32,000 crossing in West Street, Bourne, making it difficult for passing drivers to see people as they step out into the road.
Brian Bushnell, 71, of Westwood Drive, Bourne, said: "Twice in the last month I have been on the post office side of the road when cars have just ignored me and gone past over the crossing.
"On the first occasion I caught up with the driver at the traffic lights and tapped on the window and asked if they saw me. They said no and that they were sorry."
Mr Bushnell is concerned that a child or small adult wanting to use the crossing, installed by Lincolnshire County Council in March, would not be seen by motorists when vehicles were parked on the same side as the post office.
He said: "This would be the case especially if a van is parked illegally on the double yellow lines close to the crossing, which has a Belisha beacon at each side if it, or zigzag markings.
"I caught a young lady crossing the road and she told me she did not feel safe using the crossing, after having similar trouble.
"It is an accident waiting to happen – and possibly a fatality."
Former Bourne mayor Shirley Cliffe lives in West Street and agrees the crossing is dangerous.
She said: "It is hazardous for smaller people like me and those with prams, on mobile scooters or children.
"I have been caught out once or twice when crossing. Drivers need to be aware of this. I have seen others struggle to get across safely too."
Kevin Brumfield, county council area highways manager, said: "We have made the police aware of the issue and will be refreshing the road markings to make it more obvious to motorists that they should not park in the restricted areas.
Brian Burns, of the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: "Vehicles should not be parking on or near the zebra crossing because it affects visibility for traffic.
"When motorists cannot see someone stepping out onto the crossing this causes a dangerous situation."
A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: "We have been made aware of the situation and police community support officers now have the resources to deal with problems like this."
