THE ninth Oundle Festival of Literature opens tomorrow with a packed programme of talks and lectures by stars of film and television, historians, novelists, journalists and feature writers.

Tomorrow, cookery writer, Rose Prince; former jockey, writer and broadcaster, Dominic Prince; columnist and writer Sue Mott and journalist, Simon Heffer will give talks in The Great Hall in Oundle. On Sunday The Transition Town Panel will answer questions and give advice on recycling, energy and transport at Queen Victoria Hall. This is a free family event with stalls and games. Also on Sunday The Ship will host Fire v Water, where local bardic wit, Nick Perry will attempt to scupper Londoner Philip Wells - The Fire Poet, with his trademark comic thrusts in an hilarious and unpredictable lyrical head-to-head. A pirate audience of hecklers will then have the power to choose who walks the poetic plank. On Monday John Julius Norwich will speak in The Great Hall; on Tuesday Ghosts and Grandees, Virtue and Villainy will be at St Peter’s Church; on Wednesday Nigel Warburton will be at The Great Hall and there will be a literary quiz on Thursday where teams of six to eight people can get together to answer questions with a literary theme.
