Ancient art demonstrated at club in Bourne

GARDEN CLUB - The art of whip and tongue, cleft and rind grafting and chip and T budding was demonstrated to members of Bourne Garden Club at the January meeting. Clive Simms of Essendine, spoke and demonstrated on this ancient art. There is evidence that the Chinese were grafting trees at least 2,000 years ago but the art goes back far beyond 2,000 years.

Clive explained that not only fruit trees and roses can be grafted but many other woody plants and even green plants. Clive was pleased to answer questions and was thanked by Jackie Searl for his demonstration and talk. A trip to Harrogate spring flower show on April 26 has been organised by Marion Durrands, names and deposit are now being taken. It is hoped that in February the club should be able to apply for tickets to visit the garden at Highgrove later in the year.

Sandra Robb provided a selection of raffle prizes and there was a selection of magazines at the back of the room for everyone to help themselves to. Refreshments were served by Jane Downes.

The garden club meets again at 7.30pm at the church hall, Bourne, on February 16, when Miss Ann Bird will be giving a talk and slide show presentation on the roses of Japan. Everyone is welcome to enjoy interesting speakers and pick up a few gardening tips. Contact Trevor, chairman, on Bourne 570249 for more information, or Marion on Bourne 421023 to reserve a seat on the trip to Harrogate.

During the evening an auction was held by Inner Wheel members who raised £80.

The next day, Tuesday January 10 - Inner Wheel Day, several members served afternoon tea and cakes at Bourne and District branch of Disability Lincs, whose members regularly meet at the Darby and Joan Hall.
