ARMY CADET FORCE

THE Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force held their cross-country championships at Prince William of Gloucester Barracks, Grantham.

The runners were not put off by the wintry weather and their enthusiasm continued throughout the event as they aspired to beat the opponents from other areas of the county and possibly get selected for the next competition.

Two Squadron cadets were in good form and were very much to the fore in achieving their goal. The winning junior boys' team was: Liam Gray, of Bourne, Liam Scales and Benjamin Levitt, of Market Deeping, and Marcus Gray, of Grantham. Junior girls' individual winner was Annie Thomas, of Grantham.

The intermediate boys' winning team was Chris Atter, Brett Kerr and Ryan Smith, of Grantham, and James Patterson, of Bourne. Intermediate girls' individual winner was Lauren Wray, of Bourne.

For the senior boys, Reuben Wolfe, of Grantham, took individual first place and the team of Thomas Cook, Matt Stark of Grantham and Adam Turner, of Bourne, took second place in the team event.

The squadron was the overall winner.

BOURNE U3A

Bourne U3A meeting on Monday featured guest speaker Michael Brown, who talked about Medieval Gardens.

Around 140 people attended and the talk ranged from Roman times to the present day. It was fascinating to discover that the Romans influenced the layout and structure of the present day garden.

The next great influences were the monasteries and wealthy medieval families who gave us the walled gardens. These were there for the pleasure of the family and for courtship.

Many of the illustrations of the gardens were shown by slides of religious paintings, which to this day influence our thinking.

The next meeting is on March 4, 10am to noon, at Bourne Corn Exchange.

Admission costs 50p, which includes tea or coffee and a biscuit. The coffee morning is an opportunity for non-members to meet officers of Bourne U3A who will be happy to explain all our activities.

MORTON SCHOOL

CHILDREN created henna and rangoli patterns as part of an Indian day experience at their primary school.

Youngsters at Morton Primary School were visited by Sunita Patel as part of their religious education lessons and she taught the pupils the story of Rama and Sita, as well as traditional Indian dance.

Year three and four teacher Leanne Harvey said the children, who also had the opportunity to dress in saris, had a great day.

She said: "We like the children to learn about other cultures and religious beliefs to try and enhance their experience and the visit by Mrs Patel was a fantastic opportunity to do that.

"The children thought it was fantastic and they all enjoyed themselves."

MORTON WI

NINETEEN members of Morton WI braved the snow and the ice for Gardeners' Question Time with Tim Rassell.

Tim previously visited the club two years ago when he answered all the questions members gave to him.

This time they managed to think up some new ones for him, including: how to stop moles ruining the garden; how to prevent mice eating plants; and how to stop neighbours' cats from fouling the garden.

He also answered more common question about when to prune various trees and plants and what to plant where and when.

A selection of plants, brought in by Tim, were available for sale.

The competition for a pot of bulbs was won by Fiona Creasey, second came Chris Austin and third Pat Bailey.

The next meeting will be on March 3.
