Village news - Morton

WI - On January 8, Morton WI held an open meeting when friends and family were invited to hear a talk with slides by David Mainwaring on the history of the villages of Morton and Hanthorpe. Thirty people attended and learned interesting facts about villages in the past. There has been evidence found of Bronze, Saxon and Roman habitation on the sites. When the great survey (Doomsday Book) was ordered by William the Conqueror, Morton was mentioned as having a church with a priest and a population of about 350 people. This was not the church of today, which was built much later, but it was probably built on the same site.

The quiz question asked - How many bodies are buried in the church yard? Answer 13000. The question was answered correctly by Ruth Waite.

Competition for a picture of a church was won by Fiona Creasey, Tina Barnatt, and Joyce Lewis.

The next meeting will be at the village hall on February 5, when there will be a silent auction and the competition will be for a bowl of bulbs.
