Dowsby set to lose mobile library stop
A VILLAGE could lose its mobile library if residents don’t use it.
Parish clerk Sarah Galpin is urging villagers in Dowsby to use the service.
She said Lincolnshire County Council has written to Dowsby Parish Council to ask it to promote the mobile library and encourage the village’s 267 residents to use it.
She said: “Due the to low usage in recent months, with several months where no-one used the mobile library service, the county council is threatening to discontinue the service unless there is an average of three customers at the Dowsby stop in January, February and March.”
The service in Dowsby has been running since April last year, with one person per month using it on average.
Mrs Galpin, 40, who grew up in Dowsby but now lives in Mill Drove, Bourne, said it would be a real shame for Dowsby to lose the mobile library service, as the attendance data shows it is popular during the school holidays in August.
She added: “Use it now, before it is too late.”
County councillor Eddy Poll (Con), who is the executive member for cultural services, said in the current financial climate they need to ensure they only fund services that are wanted by residents.
He said: “We’re currently reviewing a number of mobile library stops that are severely under-used.
“If these stops continue to fail to attract customers, they will be discontinued.
“However, existing customers will then be referred to alternative services where possible.
“For example, some will be eligible for our housebound services.”
The mobile library service visits Dowsby next at its junction on Monday, January 30, February 27 and March 26 from 1.45pm for 30 minutes.
The mobile library route also includes stops at Haconby, Morton, Dunsby, Rippingale, Pointon and Billingborough.
The average amount of users is four for Haconby, five for Morton, seven for Dunsby, eight for Rippingale, seven for Pointon and 14 for Billingborough.
None of the other stops on the route are currently under threat.
