Did you have a passion for reading comic books?

THE Beano starring Dennis the Menace, the Bash Street Kids and Minnie the Minx celebrates its 70th anniversary this month.

Amy Morrish found out what comics you used to read in your childhood. Did you keep any of your old comics? If so call Amy Morrish on 01778 425876 and tell us what you enjoyed most about the comics of yesteryear or post your thoughts at the end of this article...

Retired Alastair Carmichael (88), of Cecil Close, Bourne, said: "I read the Beano when I was younger and so did my friends. I suppose it was the most interesting one at the time. My daughter and grandchildren also read comics. The pictures in them are fun and they keeps children busy."

Amanda Caffrey (40), of Thyme Avenue, Bourne, said: "I used to read Jackie and music magazine Smash Hits. Jackie was like a comic for girls with photo strips in. It also had love stories and problem pages too. My brother collected all of the Spiderman comics and is an avid comic reader. "

Pamela Freer (70), of Thurlby, said: "I used to read School Friend and my brother's comics including the Beano, Dandy and the Eagle, but funnily enough he never read mine. I think comics are important because they are pictorial as well as having words."

Richard Grummitt (53), said: "I read none whatsoever because I was obsessed with sport. However, my son used to read comics until he was around six or seven years old. I can't understand the attraction but they made him laugh. I suppose they are useful and an educational tool."

John Megson (63) said: "I definitely read comics when I was a child, including the Beano, Dandy, The Wizard and The Hotspur. The highlights in the Beano and Dandy were the naughty children and in the other two there were stories of adventure and heroism."

Jan Collishaw, of West Street, Bourne, said: "I read Girl when I was younger. This went with The Eagle which my brother read. Mine was a picture comic for girls with school-type stories and was very innocent in those days. My children all read comics like the Beano and Dandy."

Brian Gelsthorpe (70), of Arnhem Way, Bourne, said: "The Beano and Dandy were my favourites. I also had the Rupert Annual too. There was always a storyline in them and when you are young you use your imagination. Before I could read I would look at them and I was fascinated by the pictures."

Frank Smith (79), of Morton, said: "I used to like The Champion, the Beano and Dandy. The Champion had RAF stories in it during the war which I used to read every week. I liked the pictures in them because they were entertaining and caught my eye."
