Carlby and district WI - 22/05/09
The president welcomed – members of Carlby and District WI and visitors from Ryhall and Uffington WIs and also Carlby Gardening Club on May 12 to the village hall.
Apologies were received from Monica Smithers, Maggie Edgington, Sarah Haslam, Sarah Milne and Betty Grindey.
The minutes of the last meeting were agreed and thanks went to Janet Blacoe for the table flowers, Elaine Allwood and Anne Woolley for the raffle prizes, Pauline Crampin and Heather Shead for the teas, and Margaret Hawkins for the cakes.
NATIONAL MATTERS - A total of 25 will be sent to this year's Associated Country Women of the World project to help fund training for traditional birth attendants in Ghana.
Sarah Cardew presented this year's resolution on increased funding for research into the decline of the honey bee population. Following discussion a vote was taken and all of the Carlby members present voted for the proposal. This will be communicated to Uffington who are representing Carlby WI at the annual general meeting this year.
The national raffle tickets are on sale at 1 a ticket from Maureen Travis or Janet Trestrail.
FEDERATION MATTERS - Four members are helping at The Lincolnshire Show on June 24 and 25 this year. More cakes are needed and three other members have kindly agreed to get baking.
Pauline Crampin said she is interested in entering the Design a Notelet competition.
The petition for a domestic abuse referral centre for the county has now been sent off.
There is a visit to Doddington Hall, near Lincoln on Friday August 1 which will cost 9.
SPRING COUNCIL MEETING - The minutes of the spring council meeting were put on the table, along with the list of federation officers.
The committee has again decided to buy two Take A Chance draw tickets.
Individual members can purchase one for 5 from the treasurer.
The autumn bulb catalogue has been received and was put on the table for members to borrow if they wanted.
GARDEN FETE - Federation catering officer, Debbie Venn is organising a garden fete at her home near Dorrington on Saturday July 19. Entrance is 3.50 to include tea and cake.
There is an autumn social at Hubbert's Bridge on Friday September 25 at a cost of 7.
CORRESPONDENCE - A card was received from the group's independent auditor, James Everitt, who was most complimentary about the treasurer.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS - Birthday cards were given to Liz Kentish, Bridget Everitt, Monica Smithers and Bridget Hempstead.
The 2009/2010 programmes are now available for members to pick up from the treasurer. The programme contains not only details of the speaker but the names of members who are to give the vote of thanks, prepare the refreshments, and provide the table flowers and raffle prizes.
BRACEBOROUGH AND GREATFORD WEBSITES - Details of future meetings and minutes of meetings will be sent to Braceborough and Greatford village websites and local newsletters.
Congratulations were given to Margaret Anderson for the safe delivery of her first grandchild, a boy, named Owen Thomas Anderson.
VISIT TO DENMAN COLLEGE - Margaret Anderson, Elaine Allwood, Sarah Cardew and Margaret Hawkins have recently returned from their visit to Denman, the WI's college, and each gave an account of their stay. They had an enjoyable time and would not hesitate to go again. They urged members to think seriously about a visit to Denman.
STALLS - A well supported plant stall and the usual book stall was held at the meeting and members were reminded to take home any unsold books which they brought for the sale.
COMMERCIAL BREAK - Sarah Cardew is organising a Spa Evening on June 4 at The Grange Spa at Pointon. The cost is 20 and there are still reserved places available, contact Sarah on 590542 or Margaret Hawkins on 590348 for more details. Meet at Carlby Village Hall at 5.20pm.
Peterborough Museum is holding an exhibition, Exploding The Myth – the WI Revealed, which runs until June 7.
Sue Blessett asked members to let her know if they had any ideas for speakers or events and also to let her have details of anyone they know of who might be persuaded to entertain at meetings.
The speaker was Peter Stead-Davis, a garden designer from Northborough who stepped in at the last moment when the advertised speaker pulled out.

The next meeting is on June 9 in Carlby Village Hall. Anne Walters and her friends will be giving a demonstration entitled Hands on Crafts.
