SPEEDERS have been clocked driving at 40mph along South Road outside The Willoughby School by police. The Local reporter Amy Morrish found out if you think there should be more measures to prevent motorists speeding outside schools in Bourne.
Retired Ann Peace (73), of Bede House Bank, Bourne, said: "I live quite close to Bourne Abbey Primary School and I have noticed that the traffic slows down with the speed measures. There should be a speed limit of 20mph along South R
oad too for Bourne Grammar School and The Willoughby School because there is so much traffic about nowadays."

Retired Graham Luesby (77), of Gladstone Street, Bourne, said: "All schools in Bourne could do with temporary 20mph restrictions during school times like they have in Spalding. I know people get irritated with having to slow down but in this instance safety is very important."

Education adviser Roger Moore (63), of Thurlby, said: "I'm always in favour of any safety measures that help to keep children safe. First of all there should be adequate parking for parents away from school gates, so they don't cause congestion, and then speed restrictions of 20mph should be enforced."

Student Gareth Davies (17), of Buttercup Drive, Bourne, said: "Speed humps along South Road near Bourne Grammar School and The Willoughby School would stop drivers speeding along because they wouldn't want to damage their cars. This would help keep children safe."

Semi-retired George Salmon (72), of Saxon Way, Bourne, said: "A 20mph speed limit should be in place outside all schools in town because there would be half the impact if a child was hit by a car, meaning they are more likely to survive. Speed limits of 30mph in built up areas are too fast."

Kellie Cliffe (18), of Holloway Avenue, Bourne, said: "There should be speed measures outside Bourne Westfield Primary School because there are so many cars parked down the road and then there are cars flying about. Some people are in so much of a rush they don't think of the consequences their driving could have."

Ex-warehouse manager Roy Adcock (44), of Meadow Close, Bourne, said: "It is not just a case of needing more speed measures close to schools. More parking spaces are needed for parents to reduce congestion on the roads. Drivers should also be more observant."

Mortgage adviser Howard Williams (61), of Delaine Close, Bourne, said: "My daughter attends pre-school at Bourne Abbey Primary School, which is on a busy road. I think a maximum speed limit of 20mph should be enforced on Abbey Road because the school is close to a dangerous bend. This should apply everywhere."

I live in Spalding Road and spend many hours in the garden and I estimate that while I am tending to the garden well over 50% of traffic go past my house at higher than the 30 mile speed limit - they are probably going at 40 MPH+. So I don't think the problem is areas around schools I think it is a general problem in Bourne. Some of the traffic going down Spalding Road are large lorries and there is no way any of them would stop in a short distance in an emergency

When I first came to Bourne there were speed traps regularly in West Road, South Road and other places and it was very rare to see anyone speeding. They were there so regularly that people were very cautious. Over the past 8-10 years, I would the speed traps got less and less and now although there are 30mph limit signs on most of the roads, motorists know that they will never get caught. I also think that Cherry Holt Road is seen as a rat-run and because it is industrial, to a large degree, vehicles roar round there at whatever speed they like. I have seen a speed trap along the road, opposite Branches, but only in the afternoons when the vast majority of people have either gone or not yet returned from work. There needs to be a visible deterrent. Why does Bourne have no speed cameras?
